Not sure what kit / rtr to get

Hello everybody!

So I have a question I'm hoping you more experienced individuals could answer

My girlfriend and I are talking about picking up some 1/10 trucks

The plan is to do some indoor crawling this winter and use them to compete in the local rc truck pulls also

I was pretty sold on picking up two scx10 lll until I came across the vanquish vs4 pheonix..

My question is, how strong is the vfd twin transmission? Would it be a weak point while pulling?

Also thoughts on if the overdrive is worth the extra weight?

Or would i be better with a single speed and be able to put that weight in a more optimal position..

Weight limits are 8 pounds for stock crawler and 8.5 for workstock..

I'll take any suggestions or recommendations..

Thank you!

Vanquish is a premium rig. But truck pulling is abusive. You might consider something rugged like TRX-4s. Vanquish will have much more credibility on the rocks. It's the more serious of the two. TRX-4 just take abuse well.

Yeah the vanquish stuff seems to be awfully nice..

I'll have to think on a trx.. just not a HUGE traxxas guy..

I mean don't get me wrong I have a slash ultimate 4x4 and it's nice but I didn't have much choice as my two buddies had them and we wanted to do some racing..

one friend even hauled in a couple dump truck loads and built a track on his freshly seeded Lawn đŸ˜†

I'll have to double check with my girlfriend if she really wants to pull or is more interested in crawling..

who knows maybe We'll both get a vanquish..

The Vanquish are way more legitimate. A serious truck thats works like a competition grade out of the box. Traxxas is. Well Traxxas. Good ole reliable always the same parts on the wall Traxxas.

Yeah the problem is that my local hobby shop is an hour away and they don't even carry traxxas anymore..

They do however carry axial and I'm pretty sure vanquish as well since they're part of the horizon hobby network..

Who knows.. maybe she isn't really interested in doing any crawling comps either and just wants to hike with them..

Then maybe we'll just bite the bullet on some scx6's

Whoa whoa. Settle down. Don't go crazy. Maybe a mini. A 1/10. And then the SCX6.
Soon you're spending 5000 like that.

Hahahahaha well I do have an scx24 on a mofo carbon fiber chassis with brass axles and mudslingers and a scx24 gladiator that I swapped rear steering into..

And I've had a trail finder 2 for like 8 years

Do you like to build or do you want to go straight to play.

Pulling is a bit different, but for a stock crawler class pulling rig, I would go a different route and say the RedCat Gen8. Its a pretty stout rig and has some weight out of the box stock and imo, would probably do better at pulling then etiher the 10.3s or the TRX4s. The chassis rails are thick and strong so it will take the abuse/tugging that pulling will give. So long as you have the pulling loop tied to the chassis rails and not the plastics around it or plastic center chassis brace.

That said, its also a quite decent trial rig and the price is a bit more doable over the other options. Plenty of upgrades available for it from quality aftermarket manufacturers as well.

If you could find to older Gen8 AXE Rigs, all the better. But that is not much likely unless that hobby shop has a pair on a shelf.
A couple Hobbywing escs and Holmes puller pro motors and you'd have a pretty capable setup for 400ish each.

Thanks Timmahh

I'll check those out too!

I guess I'm in between..

I don't mind rtr or kits.. built a tamiya king hauler and a globeliner a few years back but have just been hopping up rtr vehicles lately

You can piece by piece build them. Ebay and bezos sell the parts cheap. Build a full on custom. Costs about the same as a box bought but built the way you like.

May I chime in to recommend the new VS4-10 Fordyce? It’s basically a Phoenix Straight Axle with a standard VFD. I have two Phoenixes and they are absolutely brilliant
