View Full Version : ::KJ's:: SSS The Extra - 510 Datsun

01-06-2010, 08:09 PM
Been flying around finishing projects over the past few months, one of which needed an "extra" car in the backdrop of the garage. At the time I couldn't find a 510 kit so Gonzo was good enough to sacrifice his for the cause. Just finishing up the cool stuff and thought you guys might like to see it.

It's a dark candy blue (will get better lighting out for the final shots)
Still need to install the red roll cage, finish applying decals and in the end I'll be using the same dust/mud spray technique I used on the camel trophy.

Going for a "blasting down rain/muddy gravel roads" look.
Hoping for a cool little nostalgic rally car.

Another one that should be complete for the weekend, will post up more updates soon

Man..........I remember these back in school......That's right Cory Back with Fred Flinstone...
Always wanted one of these.I'd just have to move the seat brackets back 4" and then i could drive one.
Looks awsome Kevin Nice choice of colour. What number you gonna give it?

Nice to see something other then red.
How did you make out with the shocks? Mine leak like mad!

Shocks are good on all 3 cars, including the upgraded aluminum set. No pipe dope or plumbers tape, just screwed together.
All 4 of yours leak?

01-07-2010, 07:12 PM
Thanks guys, nice to take a break from red...just for while though.
Clark if it wasen't going back to Colin it'd be 13 like always but we'll let him decide. The Bluebird project will be 13 for sure!
No problems with the shocks here and never used plumbers tape or RTV silicone...all 4 leak Troy?

Got the roll cage, rear valance, exhaust and the rest of the stickers on.
I love these little cars and the fact that they're true ten scale they actually look right parked beside a Hilux (or similar)!

A few pics...

Can we get a body off pic? That thing looks like a real 1:1 datsun sitting in the garage!

01-07-2010, 07:28 PM
what no pics of it in the scale shop:dry:....lol

looks great man!

I can show you the basic chassis as a roller, still has no electronics as it was just a roller for the shoot.
Gonzo will be installing all the good stuff.

First some of the final pics, got the dirt and mud sprayed on. I can't show you the steps because I'm using it in a magazine article but I explained the basic steps in my Camel Trophy build thread.
Looks like it's been rode hard and put away wet! hmmmCome to think of it, it'll be parked on the shelf over ther behind the CT Landy so it will like overspray blowing off the truck

Are you going to put a basic interior in it just so we don't see the chassis in your other scaler pics?

Thought for sure you'd use the lightbuckets.

01-07-2010, 08:00 PM
WoW that is amazing!
Brings a little tear to my eye, I had a 510 back in high school neat little cars.
Where did you find that body? I'd love to do the red white and blue scheme on one of those.

Nice job!

Well just one so far, but I decided I would go aluminum as soon as it leaked so I stopped putting the rest together.
Car looks great with the dirt too by the way.

Thanks guys!
The 510 is part of the HPI Cup Racer series: check it here
(http://www.hpiracing.com/kitinfo/100594/)Martina digs the 240/Fairlady but I'm a 510 guy for sure!

The interior is up to Colin when he gets it back, as I mentioned this was built for an extra in the background of a shoot and is destined for a 3s brushless setup. So working lights and the weight of extra buckets is not necessary on this one. The headlights have the covers (stickers) over them.
In the end the concern will be getting it to slow down and not end up shinny side down.

wow that dust technique is amazing!

01-08-2010, 12:19 PM
That looks amazing Kev, i think i understand the dusting i will see what i can come up with, but it wont be as clean and nice as that lol, i want some outside shots of this sitting in the dirt lol

A strong fan's the secret and short bursts of paint....thread's here (http://crawlcanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3344&highlight=camel&page=13)

Forgot some of the final pics, when I looked back today I noticed these were the ones with no body lined and grill detail...back in a bit.
I'll bring it out with me tomorrow and find a good location for a few outside shots.

A few shots from the first photo session in the proper light

And a sneak peak of the star car from the shoot.

01-09-2010, 06:55 PM
That last pic is awesome, cant wait to see the rest of the photos:luxhello::drooler:

01-09-2010, 06:57 PM
Ok Kevin that looks great. I have cleared off a spot on the shelf next to the camel for it.

I hope soon we can see the other Datsun.

01-14-2010, 09:15 PM
Got a chance to see it person today and I will say this. I can't wait to get it home and it ready for the street. It looks way better in person. Great job Kevin.

01-14-2010, 09:18 PM
That paint effect looks great Kevin.

01-18-2010, 07:02 PM
Thanks man, it's super easy and fun to do. It looks better in person cause the flash I was using lights up the mud to much
I'll post up the article to show you guys as soon as it's out

Datsun has a strong stance to it. Love those little cars. Great job on the cage.

05-14-2012, 06:52 AM
MINE! So excited I got this back. I got my hands on this car last year... then somehow let it go... but just got it back. It's not going anywhere!! So awesome... love this car. Still showroom perfect condition!! Nice work for an "extra"!!

05-14-2012, 07:18 AM
wicked, would be fun to get it out for a test drive... nothing crazy just to take the glaze off the treads

Yeah, it's going to be a functional shelf queen... hahaa... don't want to take the shine or dirt off anywhere by accident!!

Ordered the chassis and disc brake kit today... This machine needs to take proper shape!!

Will look for motor/esc in time... just want it to look like an awesome 510 on the book-case!

09-09-2012, 03:32 PM
So, I had a 240Z Cup Racer... sold it... and the new owner sold parts and modded them etc. Last week, I bought the Cup Racer back.

This is how I got it from him... ready for the Lancia Stratos body. Note the Exotek Carbon Chassis...

So... stripped it down and switched it back to the HPI chassis as I want to use the Exotek for another project. Added the center driveshaft for AWD operation. Pulled the swaybars and carbon front shock tower as well.

Stuck the brushed motor back in it... who knows if this car is ever gonna get a servo or esc... it's just going to be my shelf queen!! I may make it run, just to play with a "junker" body... but this one is special! Also put the red HPI brake calipers on it. This one is for looks only...

Why so special??? SSS - The Extra has returned... and is saved from track or parking lot abuse!! After a long long time... then trading the SSS away... and getting it back. It's not going anywhere except my RC Brag Shelf!! Enjoy the pics!

Cool you got it back!
