View Full Version : ::KJ's:: 65 Pony Car - Drift/Autocross

02-11-2009, 04:54 PM
Picked up another Tamiya the other day, very nice shape so I can have an outside car and a squeeky clean indoor car.
Because it's getting thrashed around outside I'm making it a little rough around the edges. The goal is to build a car that I can mess with outside, at home and at meets. I've been keeping an eye on the RC Trans Am series lately but I'm not much into racing anymore...a bit more layed back in my old age? I do however have the patience for stuff like autocross and like the idea of Gymkhana too, so...

This will be a nostalgic 60's race car, with a few simple tire/suspension changes will be capable of doing a bit of Auto cross, some drifting and a good allround thrashing.

A stance like this...

A paint scheme like this...aged too!

Well my kit landed today, pretty bagged from work but got a bit done and thought you might like to see the build...

This is my new kit, the TB 03D Drift Spec Chassis Kit

A few of the upgrades came today, more to follow over the coming days

Getting the diffs together, the front 1 way is assembled and the rear is stock. A fully locked rear setup should be here for the end of the week.

Rear Diff

Front Diff

Chassis assembly

Steering upgrades a must...typical Tamiya steering slop...a cheap fix

Should get it wrapped up tomorrow night.
I have a few bodies to spray and would like to get this one mounted up....More later!

Before getting back to the FJ project tomorrow I messed with the on road stuff a bit.
Stang body came in and a few more sets of wheels. The front wheels need to be modified, another set of 6mm offsets (like the rear) will be narrowed to get the proper offset.

02-22-2009, 06:19 AM
Ummmmmm:confused: you seem to be missing the rear bumper:confused:

02-22-2009, 08:20 AM
The rear bumper is moulded seperate on this, should be getting it together today.

A few more details in...

Will get to th eexaust and other stuff tomorrow, waiting for the LEDs for inside the exaust, brake disks.

Sweet. Is it gonna get a interior too?

03-09-2009, 11:21 PM
Just got these in today and I'm thinking maybe I'll use one in this but was just planning on the M Beetle driver and the nostalgic beanie helmet...who know's what tomorrow brings?

03-10-2009, 12:14 PM
More stuff in today...my favorite...Aluminum disks, look so much cooler then plastic!

I'll be getting the lights in tonight and getting the exaust tips done and glowing on the throttle!

03-10-2009, 03:18 PM
I love those discs, do they chance your offset? The plastic tamiya ones I had pushed my wheels out further, so it didnt work with my project.

03-10-2009, 04:13 PM
Where did you pick up those Aluminum disks brakes? Are those the one from the UK?

The build is looking insane, keep up the great work.

03-27-2009, 12:23 PM
really cant believe the amount of detail on some of your cars just amazing, id be scared to drive some of em

04-12-2009, 06:41 PM
Disks don't change the offset, just replace the stock hex.
They're another 3Racing product...about $20...nice detail.

Well the final push this afternoon...got my gold connectors soldered in and all of the electronics hooked up.

Body's close enough, I'm sure the guys will help with the authentic rubber swirls and scratches tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure these tires will be to fast for what I'm used to so I've got a second set of wheels and tires (MattC compound) for testing in the underground.

Thanks for wathing and the nice comments guys!

For the first time out with the car it worked pretty good. Needs some adjustment, especially the brake and suspension (forgot to fill the shocks up with oil). Needs CVDs bad...stock shafts are a problem.

It looks wicked drifting, can't wait till the Vette body comes out to do another Muscle Car build.
The HPI nostalgic Drift Tires are way to sticky for the tight course but cool for some high speed slides.
I ended up running a set of HPI wheels and MattC tires and it worked and looked even better.
Just finishing up th eexhaust and am breaking down and adding lights and a driver.
Pics to follow...

Did you manage to get any damage/dings to the body? I would really like to see it and see how the different layers of paint made it look with scratches and rubs.

Ya Kev, how'd it turn out? Need someone to help ya break in the paint? :D

04-16-2009, 04:50 AM
Got a few small scratches, bumpers and a few tiny ones down the side.
Works pretty good, those guys weren't nearly as dangerous as they made them self out to be. What made it look best was all of the dust and road gunk.
I'll get a few more pics as I complete the detail stuff.

04-16-2009, 04:12 PM
A few shots playin around today, shows a few scratches ...more of those to come!

My favorite shot so far!

Next it's back into the shop to fit the lights and scale stuff.

Lookin' very good

05-26-2009, 05:48 PM
Had this back out in the shop and should be wrapping up the details over the next week or so.

Exhaust tips are in and ready for the LEDs

Headlight & Tail light buckets are in too....wiring next

My CVDs arrived a while back so I'll get those installed and get the shock oil in this time (someone kinda forgot last outing)

05-26-2009, 06:40 PM
Nice, I really like that exhaust tip...what is it?

You have so many projects on the go, how do you remember to update them all? M must find the house some quiet while you are out working on the projects eh?

05-26-2009, 08:03 PM
Exhaust tips are Aluminum Cable ends I (I think Curly gets them for me)
They accept the 5mm LED perfect for the exhaust glow lights...looks so cool when you hit the throttle!!!

I'm guessing that's what the intercom was bought for....projects are getting less as I go and after the Giveaway Truck's done it should be managable...maybe

05-29-2009, 05:55 PM
Just posting a small video showing the exhaust glow and brake lights...will do something cooler when I do an outdoor video in action. Will look alot better when you're not looking directly into the LED (from above)
My favorite part is when you blip the throttle quick they light up kinda like a backfire.

Got the driver in so it's pretty much just mechanical stuff left.

05-29-2009, 06:04 PM
What an awesome looking machine, man you have one of the best collections to date i bet,,the lights look awesome also on it..wow.

05-29-2009, 06:19 PM
Thanks Joe...this is one of my favorite cars to date....tomorrow morning I'm tossing the Lipo in and put the stickier tires on and going to the parking lot before it gets to hot.
You'd be surprised I usually only run a float of about 5 cars....buy and sell so much it's hard to gather a collection around here!

Same here, I liked the exhaust before I knew light went in them :Wow1: that looks so cool.

05-29-2009, 06:46 PM
I'll try my best to get some driving video at dusk :3gears:

06-12-2009, 07:43 AM
Forgot to snap a pick of the driver the other day and thought I'd add it.
Shocks and CVD's next and put the other tires on for a bit more grip now that it's in Lipo mode!

06-20-2009, 11:45 PM
Tha mustache works for the era of the car huh?

10-22-2009, 10:38 PM
Just getting this one finished for some final photos then.....
I've got 3 more drifters and a special on-road car planned for this winter, stay tuned for pics and some new threads!
