View Full Version : MrCommaD learns 3D Printing!!!

I have enjoyed the last few months teaching myself how to design and print in 3D. Though I am quite adept in designing things from scratch, this world of 3D and the software required to render was a learning curve to say the least.
Through many many many hours of hair pulling frustrations, I am now confident enough to post some of my stuff here where I see all the talented builders.

I started small with my first design of a scale brake booster.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/8c26e3644b80d0a6fa15d92d4e8cb665.jpg

I tried several different variations and ended up liking a multi piece design the best. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/bc31ca4c16a8198aa0bda7d2ab9bc9fb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/3d0ba8161c5ad05b99094d8c0ee2ddb1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/cfaf62ef8a753e43c618cb334d767de9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/1d5d9c701d5e6101e341b693c4fd2954.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/722af44423ecfd7118b82a26bba302c0.jpg

I also designed other parts that would help my builds achieve a higher level of realism. These included spring perches and leaf spring mounts for a scx10
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/f59379f41beced762dfc394d53e37b27.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/265c66c491048b80f702fac541fa5a5e.jpg
Canít forget the Series 3 grill!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/009ef7d4e1103fc9df2519c2af10fb34.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/2b9baf3c3f95e27351655d001e85a3af.jpg

After figuring out how to design and make the small stuff I set my mind to design more complex scale items like engines.
My first design took a couple months to get right but I was happy with the end result. Here it is, my version of a Jeep 4.0l in-line six.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/491656fc330632ee1bad9bce126e19c3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/ad233457679f4b93de9866d8eae3e732.jpg
Now that I had the design done, it was time to print
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/bcc3bc7249f3f712faf065343ff9ee03.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/308f79136e163c9dc345fed3c022b042.jpg
The parts kept coming slowly but eventually I had everything to assemble a engine
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/23cf11af381126aee159bf8496e3f98b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/9fecd548c0f43a61edd163b88a2c6eab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/8d27ca29ff87068cdac850c971b09c76.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/db7d9c2fd0a4f1c1d7b6daa6d20187b6.jpg
Almost done https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/654a5a0a95729ff3baaa6d91608f7df4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/52bc356ac670728bb156c48841ca38cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/30694e43c575737ed6aac5133d8f5169.jpg
And itís together and looks great in the chassis

Thank you very much. Iíve been on here for a few years. But Iím probably the quietest and slowest builder so I really didnít post much.

P.S. I have some renderings of the SBF to show you

Sorry for the delay in response Matt. (I forgot to turn on notifications[emoji21])
Thanks. The resolution was a lot of tedious leveling and getting the settings just right. I use Fusion 360 for designing.

Here is one of my latest designs.

A International 345 V8. I designed this for a fellow builderís Scout build.

Fantastic work, I truely love designing on a computer, provides many challenges. As a student I get fusion360 for free, but I've been using sketchup for so long now, that I havent even tried fusion.
Albeit, I've never come across something I couldnt design in sketchup.

Added some paint to highlight the details. And of course a coil and batteries to match the scale. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/8236cfcb1d776159b3e9818da8e0715d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/3ba777cec0d66b0027474713273c86d9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/d8a6fe2d578684489b3998476903deab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/d0424aa017a4aa6ffbfa229de8b073ff.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/ae96334618614ca57d92d93e92f7ca60.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/742a9d3d9eded5b93189ef3d809bce86.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/76da3d48bd5f04d17729bca8f064121b.jpg

Really nice work, I use Fusion 360 now too. Haven't got into a bunch of engine components yet, but will be soon. While training on 3D software again (been 13yrs since using Maya) I've just been designing gadget stuff like teleprompters and stuff.
What do you run for a printer? I've just given back the loaner (Tinkerine Litto) to my buddy Colin and now run two Ender3s.
Also what are you running for filament?

Gudday mate,
I'm completely blown away by your awesome 3D printed motors.::2thumbs
I think the most impressive part is the fact you taught yourself how to use the programmes!! I don't think I'd have the IT smarts to ever figure all that stuff out, really inspiring on your behalf.
I have been seeing more and more awesome 3D printed scale accessories on the market, I'd say the future is here for our hobby. I wish you much success.

P.S - Let me know if you'd ever consider doing a Nissan TB42 (cross flow straight six petrol). I'd love one for my next build and so far all I can come up with is buying GCM,s generic straight six parts, cutting them up and adding bits on.

Cheers;)

Amazing attention to detail. Wonderful::2thumbs

Just out of curiosity, how much hours do you approximately put in designing one engine? I'm mechanical engineer and it interests me as that's really impressive level of detail. Do you use pictures as reference or do you have access to blueprints of the engines?

Fusion 360 is really good choice. It has pretty much all functions of a professional 3D design software, it's relatively cheap and there are ton of good tutorials available.

The number of hours vary, but on average there are well over a hundred hours in each one of my engine designs. Used to be a lot more as I am self taught on CAD. I only started teaching myself just over a year ago.

As for reference, I use photos I find via Google images. Lol if I could find blueprints it would probably help speed up my design time.
