View Full Version : How to: Make your JK Jeep Steer on the dash

Here's a simple tutorial on this ever popular jeep, and how to get the steering wheel on your Newbright Jeep to steer with the RX signal.

The first step is to remove the dash panel, and the screw that holds on the steering wheel. We are going to use a tiny HK servo, the 3.7 gram size. It's tiny, and it works.

The second operation is to convert the originally tight steering wheel into a slide fit. This is achieved by drilling out the hole in the dash slightly (with a standard drill) and then drilling a 1/8 hole through the middle of the jeep wheel, starting at the back where the screw was. You need to do this in order to get the servo horn screw in after assembly, and you can put a jeep sticker on the steering wheel to cover the hole.

The third operation is to cut off the tabs from a servo horn to leave just the round center part. Then CA glue that onto the backside of the Jeep steering wheel and let it dry.

Fourth: After the glue is set, you can insert the wheel back into the dash, and you can easily rotate it now. Line it up in the center position, and then place the dash face down on the table to install the servo.

Fifth: Because the servo is so small, the weight is not a factor really at all... and because of that, you can just stick it in the servo horn and it will sit there by itself. The final step is to slide in some balsa or plastic shims under the servo ears to level it and give it support. After it's steady, simply blob on top of the ears some shoogoo or another sort of thick glue, and let it set up.

Finally, after the glue is all dried, place the servo horn screw through the front of the steering wheel and secure the wheel to the servo.
That's all, folks, and if you have to re-center the steering wheel, simply remove the screw, and pull it out.... even if the dash is installed in the truck, it's super easy.

correct. and if the servo is backwards, you can do the "heyOK" servo reversing trick! ( or flip your frame mount servo horn)
