    Default Unimog Flatbed

Whilst randomly searching on the interweb I stumbled across this picture

ooh that's nice I thought closely followed by I could build that

so I started searching for more pictures of it and struck lucky as I found some on benz-world.org

It's a Unimog 404. But I am going to start off with a Tamiya Unimog 406 shell, as they look fairly similar (later I will have a go at scratch building a 404 cab).I will also be leaving the canvas roof and windscreen off as I am not very keen on them.

I already have a set of Gmade portal axles (removed from my Wreckluse, which is undergoing a strip and re-build). I also scored a RTR Honcho which is almost brand new, for less than half price as a base vehicle.

Today I actually started on the build (I am waiting for the some bits to arrive before I can really get on with the build.)

first step is to narrow the axles

Started with the rear as that's easy.

Just chopped a 1/2" off each output, and drilled the end out to take the bearing in the new position (still need to shorten the shafts which I will do in the lathe at work.)

Thanks guys, I think the biggest challenge is going to be replicating the suspension links,

but I have a couple of ideas

Nice Start - IDK how you are going to copy the torque tubes off the 404.

Had a bit of a play around tonight and I think it's going to be do-able ,

So I had some 12mm OD steel tube with a fairly thick wall. Took a stepdrill and opened out the inside diameter to 10mm at one end

    to take a 10x5x4 bearing

Then opened out the bearing land in the diff nose from 11mm to 12mm to take the tube

Next step was to chop up a perfectly good junfac propshaft a length of 5mm rod was then sleeved out to 6mm to slot into the end of the shaft (this will all be silver soldered together when I am happy with it)

    and all slotted together

ran out of shed time tonight , but the next step will be to make the brace arms and to trim down the 5mm rod and shape it to take the pinion gear.

The 1:1 rig has a wheelbase of 2700mm or there about's so I am going to shoot for approx 10 3/4" inches. Tire wise I am leaning towards a 1.9 Rock Crusher XT II on a 2.2 wheel (just not sure what wheel yet)

    More soon,
