So as I don't have enough projects and commissions on the go at the moment I have made a start on another one ::doh::

I scored a second hand spanish range rover shell and picked it up at the UK G6.

and also managed to get a set of the pre-production portal axles from Mad Moose RC (http://madmooserc.com/) the axles are copies of 1:1 Volvo C303 axles and the pre-production ones run Ascender internals, they look like this :-

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Mad%20Moose%20Portals/13686755_10154300926557103_1501815800299524552_n_z pslvs9fjuk.jpg

The axles are due to arrive in the near future, I am really looking forward to getting my hands on them.

So started project portal.

Well actually I sawed the back end off the Range Rover and removed a section and glued it all back together again and started making it a three door, but hey it's a start ;)

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5114_zpsk70mvbfj.jpg

I also purchased the metal for the chassis. Other than that I haven't decided what motor/gearbox/transfer case I am going to use but I am leaning towards an R4 and GCMs new drop case transfer box.

Progress will be slow on this for a while but I will try to keep this thread up to date.

Nice parts to start with! 303 axles under a rover seem to be a common swap in 1:1. Is that a 6x6 304 in the background ?

Hi Flo, Yep quite common in the 1:1 world which adds a nice touch of authenticity to the build. The Volvo is a 303 6x6, it's a commission for a member of a UK forum.

Any build that starts by cutting a rare body with a saw has my attention

Thanks, The decision was easy with this one as it already had the hood cut by a previous owner and some damage to the rear.

Why thank you sir :beerchug: I am really looking forward to getting my hands on them, once the minor issues with the link mounts is sorted.

As you asked so nicely

Not much progress as I am still waiting on the axles, as there have been some very minor issues with the print quality of the rear link mount which I am happy to say MadMoose have been very quick to address and resolve.

However I have been playing with my 3d printer having found a nice V8 model on Thingyverse. I still need to print off a load more detail parts for it, but the big bits are done and painted

I have also started playing about with Sketchup, and am part way through designing a 2:1 ratio transfer case for this.

Paper drawings before trying to make them digital

I have put the T-case designing on hold, and gone for a different and more aesthetic solution see below for details

Slowly accumulating parts,

Got these in the post the other day, a smallish part of the suspension ;)

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5146_zpsd22mfeba.jpg

The reprinting of the manifolds  has begun

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5148_zpsiidzuuwj.jpg

I also placed an order with GCM for the new SSD gearbox / GCM LR T2-case combo.

http://www.gcmracing.ca/ccdata/images/full1_14_357.jpg

The nice thing about this combo is it gives a 14.3:1 reduction rather than the 10.5:1 of the RC4WD R4.

More soon.

More reduction is more good. I like trucks. That is all.

I like trucks too,

So more parts have, been trickling in,

first up were these

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5149_zps67tbtuta.jpg

first impressions are very good, the axles have a nice solid feel about them and seem to spin nice and smoothly.

I will get some more pictures as I disassemble at least one of them so I can have a good look at the internals.

Next up were some wheels and rubber donuts, and tires.

I have gone for 1.9 pitbulls with CI closed cell foams mounted on SSD 1.9" Steel Trail beadlocks in silver

Mounted a couple up and stuck them on the back axle to check clearances

drop box sits really nicely inside the wheel and tire

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5152_zpshzlhwhzl.jpg

and plenty of clearance between the inside of the rim and the drop box ::D:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5151_zpswoz5iy90.jpg

I stuck the axle under the back of the shell, this is how much the tire will stick out with the axle centered :luv:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5156_zpswhemtqcf.jpg

and finally today, this shot shows nicely how much shorter the rear overhang is now

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5164_zpscq7sceqw.jpg

I am still waiting a package from Canadia (shipped today ::2thumbs) and one from RC4WD and then I can start on making the chassis and mounting up all the large bits too it.

Thanks as ever for taking an interest, more as it happens.

Not yet, I will be getting some better pictures over the weekend ;)

Spent the evening playing around with the axles :luv:.

Although the axles come with well designed mounts for a 3 link and panhard on the front and triangulated 4 link on the rear, I am going to be trying something a little different on this set. Not going to reveal any more until I have actually got something to show.

So tonight I start with the front axle and made the drag link and made a boss for part of the suspension mounting. Here's a few pics.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/20160901_202116_zpsnpj03voy.jpg

I also swapped out the drop box bolts for some scale hardware.

Made a start on the chassis this week,

started life as a straight section of 12mm x 12mm steel box

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5220_zpsonvpkiol.jpg

next up measured up and made all the bends, some are hand bent in the vice others were cut and then silver soldered.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5221_zpsfmdvwd2i.jpg

then marked the top face before getting out the death wheel and slicing the box in half.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5223_zpsceydbdef.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5224_zpsqdngygex.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5225_zpslrxrvazn.jpg

Next step will be the cross members, engine and suspension mounts.

PeteAttryde
09-11-2016, 11:37 AM
Got a bit more done today,

Added a couple of cross members and the start of the rocksliders/bodymounts

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5300_zpsxoi1sow6.jpg

as you can see I had to redesign the front chassis rail and also got a winch for the front.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5299_zpsemeydo3c.jpg

Next was step was to make a start on the front suspension link. I am going to try a 1 link and panhard on the front I may also do the same on the rear.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5296_zpsyxq4ujeg.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5295_zps2hi6fj24.jpg

last shot of the day, this is pretty much at ride height and the front link is installed, as you can just about see there is nothing hanging below the chassis rails.

finally made a little progress on this, this weekend ::awwcrap

Front axle is mostly in place, just needs a panhard bar, also mostly mounted the engine and transmission.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5327_zpsnqklpyrv.jpg

just need to slightly modify the engine mounts and stick them in place.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5326_zps9whjdarj.jpg

Also made a start on the rocksliders/bodymounts,

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5328_zpst9bydfp7.jpg

Popped the shell on to check the under hood clearance (it's close but it misses)

PeteAttryde
10-15-2016, 09:59 AM
Hmmm, didn't make as much progress this afternoon,

Got the cut out to clear the propshaft roughed out, once the shocks are in there final position and I can cycle the suspension through it's full range I will close in the tube to restore strength.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5337_zpsyiz7jhhd.jpg

This is rapidly becoming the most complicated cross-member I have built so far.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5336_zpso0wbg7z2.jpg

A quick shot of the underside,

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5335_zpsgiorxddx.jpg

Chassis end panhard bracket, still needs tidying up and soldering on.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b235/RACEFACE120/Project%20Portal/DSCF5339_zpsmivonpyh.jpg

One last one think the clearance on this should be quite handy ::D:

Thanks, I am spending a fair bit of time on the suspension as I want it to be just right, and due to the added height from the portals I also want to keep it sitting as low as possible which leads to some very tight clearances.

Got a little more done this afternoon :beerchug:

Made and fitted the upper shock mounts both front and rear, so now it's self supporting

Need to take some pics with the body off but the phone battery went flat  but here's some with the body on

This is the clearance sitting at around 5mm under ride height (currently no springs fitted)
