Hi All,

This is my first build on SBG, I have been following it for quite some time and am always floored by the quality of builds on here, keeps me entertained till no end.

Any way I have nearly completed the body, a Tamiya Beetle with plenty of patina ::D:

Have also sourced some traxxas dragster fronts, some seats from rc4wd and a willy driver.

Still have plenty to do including sourcing a chassis! thinking possibly an atomic vm2. needs plenty of room for some wide rears though.

Onto the pics;

very cool, I have done a couple of builds and never have started with a body and front wheels...I like how you approach this.

what are some of your ideas?

Nothing like building a pro street bug. Very cool looking forward to seeing this build come together.

Thanks guys,

I have been thinking of this one for a while, I basically love small wheelbase drag cars 'Pro compact' they call it in Australia, It's a pretty popular category and features lots of Datsun's, RX Mazda's, Early Corollas, VW's etc etc. High HP purpose built draggers wrapped in these cool old bodies, anyway thats the inspiration.

I'm tossing up the idea of a deck style wing but definitely a sheet metal look interior with a full cage. I have the rest of the decals to put on as well as the other little details such as lights and maybe a parachute oh and some wheelie bars.

I'm really struggling to find a decent rear wheel and tyre combo that will look phat yet still fit under the guard, I'm looking at some pan car rear with some tallish foams, any suggestions?

Also the chassis I'm having trouble deciding on - thinking of maybe one of the purpose built drag ones such as rj speed? again open to suggestions.

I'm currently working on a scale-ish workshop for some better photos as well.

Cheers,
Brenden

Hpi vintage wheels and tires might give you the look you're going for.

Also consider some of the F1 wheels and tires.
You could always braze a tube chassis together as an option?

Have you ever considered using a Tamiya M06 or M04 Chassis? Rear wheel drive

Those are very nice indeed, period correct and the tread is sweet. Finished the workshop floor which turned out okay-ish, just need to box in the sides then onto the details.

Funny you should mention those F1 wheels and tires as I saw them on ebay and was strongly considering them, also the more I think of a tube frame the more I like it, I think its time to fire up the brazing torch

Definitely thought of an M06, it would be a very good base plus the body posts were made for this shell I'm pretty sure.

In the midst of rummaging through old parts I found these WW2 Wheels, the pattern doesn't match the front but so much dish! they will need to be cut down a bit unless there is a slick that will fit them which I'm pretty sure HPI have a few options.

Some pics,

I really want this thing as low as possible;

Should be a good platform for your diorama. HPI offers those vintage wheels in a number of offsets, to give you plenty of depth.

Offset looks like 0 up front and 3 in the rear. But I'm just guessing.

They look fantastic, I have a set on the way. 5 spoke shiny chrome in 6mm off set. Hope there not too wide. Also ordered some slicks. Yew.

Should be the 6mm offset. looking forward to your built....
Beetles are always a classic and very cool at the same time!

Oh, and I had to shorten the upper rods to make the wheels fit the wheel arches as you can see.

I think the turnbuckles just met each other, no metal rod visible inbetween anmore....

I can take some more pics and measure on mine if you want....

Finally was able to finish the decals and get the head lights on, decals turned out okay. I'm not too fussed with total perfection and have taken to the ethos that imperfections add character and also if I'm too fussy I will never get anything done.

I'm still waiting for lots and bits and pieces atm but it's slowly coming together. onto the pics.

Rear rubber has arrived so I did some letter detailing, used the tooth pick technique which works great.

Was then able to do a trusty drinking straw roll cage,

Apparently it is a modified BBQ lighter, dam it looks fun  I think the bug must have this.

Should have some more parts soon as well as the (easy & cheap option) M06 Chassis.
