Got a new addition to my collection, this time it's a rally car, the recently released Tamiya XV-01 Pro. Been wanting a rally car for quite some time, was thinking about picking up one of those DF-03Ra, but then Tamiya released a new belt driven rally car platform, so I knew I have to get my hands on one of those. Enough talking, let's move on to the build.

Agreed, with the ESC.
I found the Sidewinder V1 fits perfect, all the other Castles have too big of a footprint.

Currently I'm using the Castle Creations Mamba Max Pro without the fan/top cover, pretty good fit, wires are just long enough to connect to the motor too. I have a Sidewinder SV2 coming in the mail, that one should fit perfectly in the ESC/receiver box.

Update: Installing the servo. I picked the Savox SV-0220MG.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0379_zps94d82e34.jpg

Before I install the servo onto the chassis, I took it apart to grease it with Permatex dielectric grease for waterproofing.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0381_zps0d9e4cc5.jpg

Greased the bearing to stop water from getting in.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0382_zps2c85bc1c.jpg

Also greased the side of the covers.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0383_zps1de87b50.jpg

And of course the PCB.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0384_zps6c5bc2bf.jpg

Now for the servo assembly.

Next will be body works. As much as I like the clean look of the ABC Hobbies stealth body mounts, but they can't really take much abuse, especially on a rally car, so I decided to go with the original body posts on this build. The body I'm using on this build is a Tamiya 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STi WRC, but the front body posts location isn't really where I want it to be, they located it right next to the hood scoop. So I relocated the front body posts to the front urethane bumper instead on the front shocks tower.

Same here. Most of the time, old cars looks better than new cars, IMO.

Update: Decided to paint the rims that came with the kit.

Primed.

Painted gold.

Also duct taped the inside of the tires, so they don't expend on high speed.

Also received my Castle Creations Sidewinder V2 ESC last week.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0439_zpscd6a1914.jpg

I'm probably going to run my XV-01 in the rain, so better off to waterproof the ESC as well. Carefully peel the sticker off, then cracked the case open.

http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x396/Dr_Kustom01/Tamiya%20XV-01%20Pro/DSC_0440_zps0396b423.jpg

Taped up the wires and Plasti Dip it.

Just need to put the ESC back into the case when I have a chance. Now for those who curious on the size of the ESC/receiver box on the chassis, here's a side to side comparison of the Sidewinder V2 (left) and Mamaba Max Pro (right) sitting side by side with the top case off.

Those rims look really good with that body, can't wait to see this all finished

I do want to mention that Plasti-Dip is not recommended for waterproofing (and I only learned this recently). Apparently it shrinks when drying which can rip off components, and it traps moisture. Also water can wick up the wires and end up beneath the Dip. This information is quoted from Castle Engineers and JR Holmes of Holmes Hobbies. I don't like to post to other forums, but since this may save someone's electronics here's the source:

You didn't put much on your board, and you likely won't be dunking this in water like some scalers do so you'll probably be fine, I just wanted to warn anyone else to do some research before doing the same.

Thanks for the heads up on the Plasti Dip, I only spray two coats on there, just enough to cover up the ESC. Took it out for a test run last night, so far so good, but maybe I'll replace it with epoxy later on.
